Full Description

Limiting microbial growth via control ofnutrients has been well studied for heterotrophicbacteria, but there are few studieson this approach for control of nitrifiers indrinking water. The objective of this studywas to investigate the impact of macronutrients, trace nutrients, and pipe materials onnitrification activity under simulated premiseplumbing conditions.Nitrification can vary dramatically in adistribution system, depending on the pipematerials used and the nutrients that are present.Utilities concerned about effects of nitrificationshould examine extremes of the distributionsystem, including premise plumbingsystems, to characterize the full range of possibleeffects. Water suppliers can use the resultsto guide sampling and detect parts of the distributionsystem that are most susceptible togrowth of nitrifying bacteria. Control of nitrificationis a complex problem with publichealth implications, so this knowledge will behelpful in planning holistic and comprehensivemanagement of distribution systems.Includes 45 references, tables, figures.
