Full Description

Degradation of tribromoacetic acid(TBAA) in pipe reactors constructed of newand previously in-service iron pipe was investigatedto evaluate the potential role of abioticreduction in the loss of disinfection byproducts(DBPs) in distribution systems. Results showed that DBPs that are readilydegraded by iron metal or ferrous iron associatedwith iron oxides can compete with dissolvedoxygen for reduction equivalents atthe pipe surface, indicating that abioticreduction of highly reactive DBPs at the pipewall may be an important loss process in distributionsystems.Given that brominated and iodinated DBPshave been shown to be more toxic than theirchlorinated analogues, the finding that abioticreduction may lead to their destruction, andthus lower consumer exposure to them, shouldbe of considerable interest to water utility managers. The process (which previously has notbeen considered in the fate of DBPs) can beused in models to help evaluate and predictDBP levels in distribution systems. Includes 33 references, table, figures.
