This powerpoint presentation begins by providing a brief overview of sustainability and the water industry. Leadership in Energy and EnvironmentalDesign (LEED) is presented, along with an example of bringing sustainability into focus at American Water. Lessons learned from LEED include: design-build project deliverymethod is well suited to LEED;no significant additional capitalcost at lower levels of LEEDcertification;employees enthusiastic,communities positive; and,established, structured programhelpful,recognition of LEED "brand"; process "discovered" goodexisting practices, new approachstretched team to implementothers; and,practices broadly applicable to allconstruction. Lessons learned about sustainability include: planning in a wider context and with along view;minimizing environmental impact;efficient management of water resources such assource water protection, treatment and delivery, conservation, reuse;maintenance and upkeep ofinfrastructure to maximize efficiency ofassets and limited capital; financial viability - full-cost pricing ofwater, rates that will sustain operations and support necessaryinvestment in infrastructure;development and retention ofqualified, motivated staff;climate change - prepare for droughtand flood, manage risks; and,communication with customers andstakeholders about water issues.
