Full Description

This powerpoint presentation begins by providing a brief overview of particle size distributions. Project objective was to develop a framework for optimization ofcoagulation pretreatment for low pressuremembranes on the basis of natural organic matter (NOM) removal andthe characteristics of the floc that are formed. An example of coagulation pretreatment for low pressure membranes is presented, with experimental approach including the following: develop an improved method for characterizingfractal dimensions of floc; characterize particle size distributions andfractal dimensions during coagulation; and, relate floc characteristics to particulate foulingof membranes. The Coulter Counter, the DPA-4100-D Particle Analyzer, and jar testing are all discussed along with preliminary findings that indicate the following: the methodology for measuring the fractaldimension, D3, appears sound, some difficulty in analyzing real flocs; process configuration strongly influences theparticle size distribution and morphology; flocculation leads to larger aggregates with lowerfractal dimensions; once broken by shear, flocs do not re-aggregate to thesame extent; and, NOM removal occurs early in the pretreatmentprocess. Includes tables, figures.
