The goal of this study was to determine the occurrence andremoval of amino acids (AAs) during drinking water treatment processes. The fate of AAs was determined in bench-scale laboratory testing as well as in samplescollected from full-scale drinking water treatment plants (WTPs). Bench-scale coagulationtesting was performed on three waters using alum with no pH adjustment and a taperedflocculation scheme. Full-scale samples were collected from sixteen WTPs located across theUnited States which were treated water impaired by upstream wastewater discharges or algalblooms during the summer/fall of 2006/2007. The samples were collected along the full-scaletreatment train after each unit process. AAs were determined in each sample as well as basicwater quality (DOC, DON, etc.). Includes 16 references, figures.
