The construction of new treatment plants or expansion of existing ones often involvesinstallation of new pipelines, and open trenching is often one of the methods for most ofthe new installation. This paper presents an alternative to open trenching as a means forpipeline installation - microtunneling. Various aspects of microtunneling design andconstruction challenges are presented, including subsurface conditions, machineselection, ranges of applicability (pipe size and length), and construction limitation. Includes 3 references, tables.
