This powerpoint presentation begins by providing a brief overview of factors impacting microbialtransport and fate in porous media. Microorganisms and surrogates studied includedC. parvum oocysts,B. subtilis spores, and4.5 m microspheres. Experimental design included: 10cm and 20 cm length columns;column orientation - vertical and horizontal;media - composition: 99% silica,size range: ~0.2 - 1.2 mm,d50: 0.2 mm and 0.6 mm, andUC: 1.5 and 2.2;DOM: 0 mg/L and 5 mg/L;IS: 1mM and 100 mM KCl; and,Rates: 1 m/d, 10 m/d, 40m/d. Preliminary conclusions indicate the following: column design can impact observed microoganism andtransport surrogate removals by filtration at watervelocities ~10 m/d;the presence of higher levels of NOM may counteractthe impact of column orientation (further investigationrequired); and,ionic strength can impact observed microoganism andtransport surrogate removals by filtration at watervelocities ~10 m/d.
