Full Description

This paper discusses challenges to the application of aquifer storage and recovery (ASR) in sand and gravel aquifers within the northern Atlantic coastal plain. The challenges generally fall within four interactive categories: hydraulics, geology, geochemistry, and biochemistry. Specific hydraulic challenges include injection pressure limitations, site hydraulic gradients, well design considerations, and air bubble entrainment. Geologic problems include potential for orders of magnitude changes in hydraulic conductivity over very small distances and variations in mineralogy and shrink/swell potential of clays. Geochemistry issues include preventing mineral precipitation and particulate formation which results in well screen and gravel pack plugging, and preventing mineral dissolution which could cause deterioration in water quality. Biochemical considerations include stimulation of bacteria growth resulting from injecting oxygen-rich waters into previously anoxic formations. The authors believe that in-situ pilot tests with simulation of multiple recharge cycles are required to understand how the natural system will respond to injected water.
