Full Description

The Japanese drinking water quality standards have been amended based on a preliminary health risk assessment. The number of contaminants listed in the standards and guidelines equate to about three times that of the old standards. According to the result of the preliminary survey of contaminants in drinking water, it is rare to detect potentially hazardous contaminants as high as the level of the new drinking water quality standards. Also, the Environmental Agency revised the Ambient Water Quality Standards of health related parameters in March 1993 by referring to the new drinking water quality standard. Therefore, there may be a number of public water works at which immediate action will be taken for improving drinking water quality. More effective cooperation between the public water supply sector and the ambient water quality management sector for better drinking water quality management has been launched by two new laws related to water resource conservation. However, the new drinking water quality standards are expected to be a very effective tool to facilitate communication between consumers and public water supply authorities and to improve drinking water quality as a whole.
