In this paper the authors discuss a procedure to select groundwater sources for further evaluation through microscopic particulate analysis (MPA). The entire process is dynamic and includes a protocol which prioritizes when and if source evaluations are conducted, public water system self-monitoring requirements, a correlation analysis of groundwater sources, the analysis of coliform sample results, the conduct of MPAs, the determination of source type, and EPA notification of changes in source type. This paper focuses on the use of multiple regression and simple correlation analyses to identify groundwater sources that exhibit characteristics of surface influence so that the resources available to conduct MPAs can be used more efficiently.
