Full Description
This paper describes the North Carolina-Water For People (NC-WFP) Committee's program of technical assistance in Bolivia. Andean Rural Health Care's (ARHC's) census-based health care delivery system has been highly effective in providing such services as immunizations, neonatal care, and health education to the rural poor in Bolivia. While significant progress in many areas has been made, infectious disease associated with contaminated water and inadequate sewage disposal continues to be a major public health problem. The ARHC and the communities themselves consider an adequate supply of safe drinking water to be one of their highest priorities, but they do not have the technical expertise to solve these problems on their own. NC-WFP believes that an effective, long-term cooperative effort with ARHC will lead to significant improvements in access to potable water in many communities in Bolivia. Priority will be placed on ensuring the sustainability of each project that is undertaken, which will undoubtedly be facilitated by the extraordinary effectiveness of ARHC and its commitment to the people it serves. The linkage that NC-WFP has established with ARHC should also provide opportunities for WFP committees in other states to participate in water and sanitation projects in Bolivia. Product Details
