Full Description

In previous years the water distribution system of Ann Arbor experienced a strong decline in the chloramine residuals measured at distant sampling places. The problem was perplexing, but a raise in the pH of the water caused a much greater stability in the chloramine residuals. In September and October of 1992 a major experiment was performed to study the effect of a lower pH value and a number of water quality parameters were monitored at numerous sampling points. A geographical information system was used to follow the changes, and a computer model (EPANET) was used to predict the water quality changes. Remote monitoring techniques were used to continuously monitor chloramines. The results and implications of this study are presented.
