This report reviews current disinfection practices, the changes made in these practices to meet regulations, and the implications of these changes for operations and finished-water quality. A number of topics are reviewed, including regulations, analytical concerns, trihalomethane control strategies, and adverse effects of disinfection. These topics reflect the complexity of current disinfection issues and the changing nature of drinking water regulations. This report also includes recent water utility survey data that provide a look at current disinfection practices and operations compared with practices in the late 1970s.
