Full Description

To comply with regulations set by the USEPA under the amended Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA), water utilities must usually install treatment technology to meet maximum contaminant levels (MCLs). The SDWA, however, imposes certain legal requirements on USEPA to specify the best available technology (BAT) for lowering concentrations of contaminants being regulated. BAT is considered in determining the level of control (e.g. MCL) for a contaminant and in issuing variances. When selecting a treatment technology, utilities should carefully consider those technologies specified as BAT for meeting MCLs and those specified as BAT for purposes of obtaining a variance. This article provides a brief overview of best available technology. Includes 4 references.
