A laser-based particle size analyzer was used to characterize trends in particle size distribution through conventional water treatment and through in-line filtration. Review of the literature on particle detachment and filter pore flocculation and of data from the particle size distribution experiments led to the development of a conceptual filtration model, which incorporated particle attachment and detachment, as well as preferential tube (wormhole) flow in the filter bed. Includes 27 references, table, figures.
