The Kenton County Water District in Northern Kentucky, in association with the University of Cincinnati, has investigated biofiltration follow by granular activated carbon (GAC) adsorption to reduce disinfection byproduct precursors in settled Ohio River water. The role of preozonation was also evaluated. Disinfection byproducts that were investigated were total organic halide, trihalomethanes, and haloacetic acids. The impact of the different treatment processes was evaluated on the trihalomethane and haloacetic acid individual species.
