New regulations being set by the U.S. EPA under the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) are creating new pressures on water utilities. The number of water quality regulations has increased from 22 interim regulations to 62, and more are on the way. As a result, drinking water practice is experiencing the fastest period of change in water industry history. Regulations set under a number of other laws in addition to the SDWA have a direct impact on utilities. Keeping up with the development and implementation of new rules will be challenging. A brief review of significant regulations impacting utilities is described.
