The objectives of this paper are to provide operators with safety information pertaining to the operation and maintenance of the water distribution system and treatment plant. Areas of safety discussed are; operator responsibilities, principle reason for unsafe acts, personal protective equipment and clothing, work area protection, trench construction, confined space entry, control of hazardous energy sources, federal hazard communication standard/right-to-know law, the occupational exposures to hazardous chemicals in laboratories standard/lab right-to-know standard, laboratory safety, and safe handling of chlorine. Also discussed is Miss Dig/Utility Check, a utility communication system that helps utilities and contractors comply with State Law and Federal Regulations which requires them to notify utilities before starting a project. The objective of Miss Dig is to determine the location of underground utilities for the purpose of preventing damage to these facilities.
