The challenges presented to water suppliers seeking to meet both the secondary, aesthetic requirements, and the primary standards are indeed formidable. In numerous instances, membrane based technologies have helped to solve these difficult water quality problems. This paper will discuss membrane technologies that USEPA has identified as best available technology (BAT) for meeting USEPA drinking water standards. It will also provide two case studies to illustrate how membranes have been successfully applied to remove both primary and secondary contaminants in public water supplies.
