Full Description

Although CAD software can be used as-is for drafting and design, it generally must be customized with macros or programming for maximum productivity. The programming tools available within Intergraph's latest CAD software, MicroStation 4.0, offer the capability to write very sophisticated programs. The programming environment in MicroStation 4.0 is called MicroStation Development Language (MDL). Although MDL offers unprecedented programming power, it also poses new challenges to the programmer. A typical MDL program is event-driven, may have a graphical user interface, multi-tasks with other MDL programs, makes calls directly to MicroStation's kernel, and is 100% portable across a variety of hardware platforms (PCs, Macs, SPARCStations, and Intergraph's own Clipper workstations). Building a good MDL program requires an understanding of these elements. This paper discusses specifics of programming in MDL, with particular emphasis on applications to water facility design. Although the discussion is particularly relevant for MicroStation users, most of the concepts presented would apply to development of event-driven programs in other multi-tasking graphical environments.
