Pumping costs are the major operating expense of groundwater supply systems. This paper presents a non-linear optimization model to minimize pumping costs for a service distribution system. The general non-linear optimization program MINOS is used to solve the algorithms and the very popular simulation model KYPIPE is used to verify the solution. An example problem is analyzed by this method. A case study of the possible application to the water distribution system at Memphis, Tennessee, is discussed.
