Full Description

Ceramic membranes were used to treat a surface water with moderate to high concentrations of dissolved organic carbon and turbidity. The permeation behavior of tubular membranes with nominal pore sizes of 0.05, 0.2, 0.5 and 0.8 um was evaluated using coagulation before membrane filtration and without coagulation pretreatment. The permeate quality from each membrane was evaluated. The highest fluxes and best permeate qualities were obtained using coagulation pretreatment in conjunction with the 0.05 um membrane. This treatment combination yielded product water turbidities of approximately 0.1 NTU and DOC removal of 40 to 60%. The steady state flux of permeate achievable by this treatment is estimated to be between 300 ad 400 liters/m2-hr.
