The objectives of this research were to: (1) evaluate both the stoichiometry and the reaction kinetics between chlorite and ferrous iron as a function of solution pH, temperature, dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentration, and dissolved oxygen concentration; (2) assess the potential for chlorate formation as a by-product of the ferrous ion - chlorite reaction; (3) assess the fate of iron during treatment, including potential problems that may develop due to excess ferrous iron addition; (4) evaluate the coagulation benefits associated with the ferric hydroxide floc that is formed from the chlorite - iron reaction.
