Full Description

The impacts of dissolved organic matter, reactor configuration and granular activated carbon particle size on equilibrium adsorption of trichloroethylene were examined under simultaneously loading and early preloading conditions for a river water. Differences in isotherm capacities obtained using batch-reactor and column-reactor estimation methods were observed when natural background organic matter and trichloroethylene were adsorbed simultaneously onto bare activated carbon. However, differences in isotherms derived from the two methods were diminished when the carbon was first preloaded with the background organic matter in the river water in the absence of trichloroethylene. Significant increases in isotherm slope were observed with increasing preloading time for two granular activated carbon particle sizes. Isotherms determined using powdered activated carbon that had been crushed from preloaded granular carbon resulted in parallel isotherms, however, with capacities increased from the parent preloaded carbon over the concentration range of interest.
