Full Description

Recovery of mycobacteria from chloramine treated municipal water systems suggests that these organisms are resistant to this disinfectant. To gain a better understanding of this resistance, suspensions of mycobacteria including Mycobacterium avium, Mycobacterium intracellulare, Mycobacterium kansasii, Mycobacterium gordonae, Mycobacterium chelonei, and Mycobacterium fortuitum were grown for one week in 7H9 broth. Aliquots were added to chloride demand-free water and challenged with chloramine residuals similar to those achieved during water disinfection processes. Strains were additionally challenged with 3.0 and 6.5 mg/l chloramine. The authors found that chloramine levels which approximate water disinfection criteria have little effect upon inactivation of certain species of potentially pathogenic mycobacteria and may be selected by this and other mechanisms, resulting in increased risk to susceptible hosts in hospital or residential settings.
