Full Description
Following problems with chloramination, the Hackensack Water Company (New Jersey) suspended chloramination and instead experimented with smaller dosages and multiple feed points of chlorine. Experiments showed that, while this helped to reduce THMs, to control THM synthesis in the distribution system chloramines would be needed. This paper summarizes findings relating to the use of chlorine in the treatment train and chloramines for post treatment. Findings regard the feed location and ratio of ammonia to chlorine, public relations efforts necessary before chloramination is instituted, the benefits of chloramination, and issues involving biofilms, nitrification, ozone, and the sale of water to other water agencies that use a free chlorine residual.
