During bench-scale studies, several membranes were evaluated by the Drinking Water Research Division of EPA to determine their potential for removing organic compounds. During a research effort at Suffolk County, New York, parallel evaluations of reverse osmosis and granular activated carbon followed by ion exchange were done to study the effectiveness of these treatment processes for removing aldicarb sulfone, aldicarb sulfoxide, carbofuran, 1,2-dichloropropane, and nitrate from a contaminated drinking water. A small pilot plant was used to evaluate the performance of an ultrafiltration membrane to reject six SOCs: alachlor, chlordane, heptachlor, methoxychlor, dibromochloropropane (DBCP), and ethylene dibromide (EDB). Other ultrafiltration studies showed excellent removals of THM and TOX precursors. The author summarizes the findings of numerous research studies, and offers brief overviews of general concerns, regulations, and research needs.
