Full Description

Long duration manned space missions require significant logistics support to maintain a safe and healthy environment for the crew to live and work in. In order to minimize logistics burdens, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is developing regenerative environmental control and life support (ECLS) systems which provide oxygen and water through various closed-loop recovery processes. This paper provides an overview of the rationale and requirements for closed- loop water recovery and reuse aboard the Space Station Freedom and describes the physicochemical processes currently being developed to meet those requirements in the unique, microgravity environment of space.
