Turbidity associated with whiting (carbonate precipitates in water columns) has been observed to be a significant component of turbidity in hard-water lakes and reservoirs. A description of the character of whiting is presented, including the related chemistry, driving forces for occurrence, ubiquity of the phenomenon, and features of importance to water suppliers.
