For decades the Water Utility Management Institute (WUMI) has provided leadership skills to help meet the demands confronting water utilities in the contemporary setting. This paper presents an overview of the various WUMI and describes the topics that each program covers and the leadership and management skills that are gained by their participants. The following are among the topics that these annual programs focus on: strategic and financial planning; industry trends and benchmarking; organizational and personal effectiveness; decision making and problem solving; personnel selection and conflict management; performance management; interpersonal communications; and, public and media relations.
