Full Description

On May 21, 1998 the first US full scale microsand ballasted flocculation and clarification plant was brought on line at the North Table Mountain Water Treatment Plant (NTMWTP) in Golden, Colorado. This plant replaced a conventional coagulation, flocculation, and sedimentation plant. This paper presents nine months of water quality data of water treated by the microsand flocculation/clarification process. These water quality data are compared to water quality from the previous year when the water was treated in the conventional plant. To be noted is that these comparisons are just for the NTMWTP and may not reflect how a microsand ballasted flocculation clarification plant would perform with other raw water sources. The water quality data parameters examined include turbidity, Total Organic Carbon, Total Trihalomethanes, Haloacetic Acids, standard plant count, Microscopic Particulate Analysis, and microorganism log removal. Microbial effects of recirculating microsand back into the system are also examined. Operational aspects of a microsand ballasted flocculation/clarification plant are also discussed, including chemical costs and power consumption costs as compared to the conventional plant.
