Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) recently completed a strategic plan for upgrading the supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system used to monitor and control its water system. The current SCADA system consists of a mix of technologies installed over several decades. The planned upgrades will form the foundation for future system operations, add capacity for new facilities, integrate SCADA with other information systems, and provide control system redundancey. Recognizing the importance of providing adequate resources to the success of implementing a major technology initiative such as the one proposed, the SCADA Upgrade Strategic Plan lays out a sequenced approach for the upgrades, provides budget estimates, identifies staffing and organizational requirements, and recommends a training strategy.
