Full Description

This paper examines the effect of sulfates, bicarbonates, and orthophosphates on the precipitation and aging of copper solids formed in dilute nitrate solutions. In order to examine the role of chemical addition, two types of experiments were conducted. In the first, cupric nitrate addition was followed by addition of 0.5 mm of either NaHCO3, Na2SO4, or Na3PO4 as desired in specific experiments. In the second type of experiment, the solution containing cupric nitrate and sodium nitrate was first titrated with NaOH to pH 7.0 and allowed to age for 2 hours. Both types of experiments might be relevant to control of copper release from pipes in potable water. For example, the first experiment assesses whether a solid other than Cu(OH)2 might form initially on a pipe surface if a particular anion is present, whereas the second examines effects of each anion on the possible transformation of cupric hydroxide to less soluble copper solids with age.
