This article describes a study in which four nursing homes were surveyed to determine the extent to which potable hot water systems were colonized by Legionella pneumophila and to measure microbial and chemical factors related to legionellae contamination. One of the four nursing homes was subsequently equipped with a commercially available copper-silver ionization system, and this system was evaluated during its first two years of operation. This article describes the results of these studies, and reviews some basic information on the bacterium, Legionella spp., and the disease, legionellosis. Includes 15 references, tables, figures.
