Full Description

In 1994-1997, the surface waters which supply drinking water to the Milwaukee area were monitored for Cryptosporidium and Giardia. These surface waters include the Milwaukee, Menomonee, and Kinnickinnic Rivers of the Milwaukee River Watershed. The frequencies of detections of the microorganisms studied were recorded and compared. No single environmental variable appeared to be consistently associated with Cryptosporidium or Giardia occurrence, although some possible seasonal patterns were detected. Each site had at least one unique characteristic in terms of occurrence of at least one of the microorganisms studied, including E. coli. At the Milwaukee River, Cryptosporidium occurred most frequently in the fall. In samples taken from the Menomonee River, more Cryptosporidium detections occurred after rainfall events in the summer and fall of 1994-1997. The Menomonee River had the highest geometric mean E.coli concentration.
