Full Description

This paper describes WATERPRO, an interactive spreadsheet computer program developed for modeling and evaluating changes in water characteristics related to water treatment. It has two applications. The first is to assist in determining the corrosive nature of water. If corrosion control is required, the user can choose the type of treatment provided in the program and model how each selected treatment may affect the corrosivity of the finished water. The corrosivity of the water is based on a number of calculated corrosion indices and theoretical copper and lead concentrations, which are used as benchmarks before and after treatment. The second application evaluates characteristics of a surface water source and the changes in those characteristics due to chemical additions commonly used in surface water treatment. Desired chemical dose rates can be input into the program and the resulting changes in pH, alkalinity, and acidity are modeled. Topics covered include: thermodynamic reactions; corrosion indices; Langelier saturation index; aggressiveness index; Larson's Ratio; calcium carbonate precipitation potential; total and free calcium ion; saturation index; buffer intensity; changes in water characteristics during and after treatment processes; pH change due to temperature correction; and, effects of chemicals on alkalinity, acidity and calcium.
