Full Description

This paper describes a study conducted to determine whether water saving devices significantly reduce water usage and wastewater disposal. Monthly water meter readings were made for preselected subdivisions in the Dublin San Ramon Services District and the city of Pleasanton in California. One group included homes in which water saving devices had been installed, while the control group included homes in which no water saving devices were utilized. Results show that water savings of 113 L/day could be achieved in average homes with 3.5 occupants each through the installation of water-saving plumbing fixtures. Furthermore, a reduction in water use reduced wastewater flows by a comparable amount, thus avoiding the need for a costly expansion of the wastewater disposal system. Includes 6 references, tables, figures.
