The report "Drinking Water and Cancer," released on December 17, 1980, by the President's Council on Environmental Quality, presented evidence to support an association between several types of cancer and chlorinated water. In response, a study of the chlorinated water system in Pittsfield, Massachusetts was undertaken. This paper describes the resultant water treatment proposal which includes flocculation, dissolved air flotation, dual media filtration, granular carbon adsorption, and disinfection.
