Two drinking water distribution systems, one containing chlorinated surface water and the other unchlorinated groundwater, were sampled to evaluate media and plating techniques for bacterial enumeration. Results showed the pour plate method to be inferior to the spread plate method for the enumeration of total and pigmented bacteria in both systems. Effects of fluctuating chlorine levels are also discussed. Includes 13 references, tables, figure.
