Municipal water and wastewater systems have been shown to be the largest energy consumers by local units of government. By studying unit processes at four utilities in the state of Michigan, the authors were able to pinpoint several areas in which sizable energy savings could be realized. The greatest conservation opportunities are in pumping electricity for water systems and in aeration blower drive electricity and natural gas for sludge heating and incineration for wastewater systems.
