Pretreatment is an important aspect of granular activated carbon technology and may have a significant influence on carbon performance and economics. In this study river waters were used as a source of naturally occurring organic material to assess the impact of operating variables on organics removal. It was found that organics removal is increased with increasing alum doses, and that alum doses higher than those normally used for turbidity removal are needed to obtain the best organics removal. Alum dose and pH were the most important variables. Includes 10 references, table, figures.
