Deficiencies inherent in the tentative standard method (TSM) for concentrating viruses from water can be overcome or circumvented by certain procedural modifications. Interference by soluble or colloidal tap water components with the virus adsorption to the filter surfaces can be overcome by the addition of polyvalent cation salts to the tap water before adsorption. The use of alternative adsorbent filters can circumvent several difficulties with the present TSM. Finally, elution of alkali-sensitive virus types can be markedly enhanced by the use of alternative eluent media. Includes 17 references, tables.
