The more stringent requirements of the Safe Drinking Water Act have impacted on the operation of water utilities, calling for adjustments in operation and modifications of plant facilities to obtain the required finished water quality at reasonable costs. Modification techniques applied to unit processes of surface water filtration plants such as rapid mix, flocculation, sedimentation, filtration, and process control can improve water quality, reduce operating costs, and often increase plant capacity at a fraction of the cost for new plant construction.
