Recent earthquake damage to water lines has emphasized the vulnerability of water distribution systems. Current research on seismic vulnerability and the design of buried pipelines has resulted in the development of simplified methods for analysis of seismic groundshaking. This research is used to develop a procedure for the design of pipelines that can resist seismic excitation. Faults and landslides, wave propagation, axial versus bending strains, and strain and stress in pipe are design considerations that are discussed here. Includes 11 references, tables, figures.
