Full Description

The Welding Research Council has initiated and sponsored many significant research programs on the weldability of steel since its establishment in 1936 by the Engineering Foundation. In 1953, the Council published the First Edition of the Book Weldability of Steels by R. D. Stout and W. D. Doty. An extensive amount of research has continued under the guidance of the Weldability Committee over the years and this Book has been revised three times. The Second Edition was issued in 1971 and the Third Edition was issued in 1978. Over the years, new high-strength steels have been developed and the impurity levels of all steels have been lowered appreciably. Considerable research work has been done both in this Country and abroad to keep abreast of these changes.

This is the Fourth Edition of the Book Weldability of Steels and it has been extensively revised by Dean Emeritus R. D. Stout, Lehigh University and supporting authors to bring the information up-to-date. A considerable amount of research over the years hasbeen supported by the American Iron and Steel Institute and due acknowledgement is hereby made for this sponsorship.

Our thanks and sincere acknowledgement are hereby given to Dean Stout and his supporting authors: Prof. A. W. Pense, Associate Dean of Engineering and Associate Director of the Center for Advanced Technology for Large Structures, Lehigh University; Dr. B. R. Somers, Research Engineer, Lehigh University, and Mr. R. E. Somers, Consultant. Special credit is given to Mr. C. W. Ott, Consultant, and Mr. D. J. Snyder, Consultant, for updating the Appendix that contains the Weldability Table Steel Compositions with Suggested Practices Generally Required for Sound Weldingand the Index of Steels in the Weldability Table.
