This report presents the results of an investigation of nine open-web expanded beams fabricated from an 8B10 rolled shape. The beams tested to destruction had depths varying from 1.33 to 1.78 of the original 8B10 shape. An unexpected 8B10 beam was used for a pilot test and as a basis for comparisons. All beams were subjected to symmetrical 4-point loading to simulate, as much as possible, uniform loading conditions. Each specimen was laterally supported with bracing attached to the compression and tension flanges at four points along the span.Deflections were measured and Load-Deflection Curves are presented for each specimen. The observed initial yield and strength is compared to that computed by a simple procedure which is recommended as a design method. Calculated stiffnesses are compared to measured experimental stiffnesses.
